Tips & Tricks

You can hide the translation of example sentences and only show it when you need.

To use this feature, go to Settings and turn off Show Translation. You can read the translation of any example sentence by tapping it.

You can use Midori's Safari Extension to create a list of words from any Japanese webpages. To use this feature,
  1. Go to any Japanese website, and tap the arrow the action button button
  2. Swipe to the right and tap "More"
  3. Turn on "Translate in Midori" and tap "Done
  4. Tap "Translate in Midori"
Next time, you can skip steps 2 and 3.

You can also translate a specific part of the page by selecting it before tapping the arrow button.

Basic

▸ Does Midori require an internet connection?
No, Midori does not require an internet connection. Midori is completely offline.
▸ How do I look up words from other apps?
Use midori://search?text=...

For example, To translate long text, use midori://translate?text=...

For example,
▸ How do I hear the pronunciation of a word or use high-quality voices?
To hear the pronunciation of a word, tap on a headword and tap "Speak."

To use high-quality voices,
  1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Voices > Japanese > Kyoko
  2. Select "Kyoko (Enhanced)"
▸ How do I use wildcard search / search backward?

There are simply two rules:

  • Use a question mark ("") to specify a single character.
  • Use an asterisk ("") to specify zero or more characters.
   

Examples:
  • finds words of length 3 that start with 日 and end with 語.
  • finds words of any length that start with 日 and end with 語.
  • finds words that end with 大学.
  • finds words that contain 好.
  • find words that start with みど and are followed by one or more characters.

Bookmarks

▸ How do I share bookmarks?
  1. Go to the Bookmarks tab, and make sure you are not inside any folder.
  2. Tap the action button, choose Share > MIDORI, then email the file to the device you would like to import bookmarks.
  3. Open the email and open the file, then choose Import.
If you would like to share a specific folder, you can go inside that folder and do the same steps.
▸ How do I sync bookmarks between an iPhone and an iPad?
Midori doesn't support bookmark syncing yet, but you can achieve the same results by the following steps:
  1. On the iPhone, go to the Bookmarks tab, and make sure you are not inside any folder.
  2. Tap the action button, choose Share > MIDORI, then email the file to yourself.
  3. Open the email on the iPad and open the file, then choose Import.
Your iPad will now have bookmarks from both devices.

Then, do the same steps but in the opposite direction, i.e. share bookmarks from the iPad to the iPhone. Your iPhone will now have bookmarks from both devices.

Flashcards

▸ How do I create flashcards?
You can create flashcards in two ways:
  1. Go to a kanji list and tap the action button on the top right corner. Then tap Flashcards


  2. Go to a bookmark list and tap the action button on the top right corner. Then tap Flashcards

Miscellaneous

▸ The user interface is in Japanese. How do I change it to English?
To change the user interface to English,
  1. Go to Settings > Midori > Language
  2. Select "English"
▸ Do you have plans to release Midori for Android / Mac / Windows Phone?
We would love to have Midori on every operating system, but our resources are limited. If you would like to have Midori on any OS, please let us know. The higher the demand, the more incentive for us to work on it.
